Latest update from The Sint Maarten Yacht Club

There's still a long road ahead but we are thrilled to have received the following positive update from one of SAUK's grantees The Sint Maarten Yacht Club.
"We would like to thank Sail Aid UK for their generous donation towards our rebuilding efforts. The funds you provided were allocated to rebuild our storage area. We completed this only a month ago, unfortunately delays in construction are common these days as labor and materials are hard to come by due to the high demand. We are still tweaking it but it already has been put to good use (see photos). Early November we hosted the Sol St. Maarten Optimist Championships and set a record with 35 entries for the event, welcoming a large number of kids from Antigua, St Barts and St Kitts.
"We also started a new program, our Primary School Program, introducing local kids from primary schools to sailing. We have been able to start the program with one school through the generous donations of local businesses, but are looking to further develop this and cooperate with multiple schools.
"Our sailing school is close to its original number of kids before Irma, with 60 kids sailing on a weekly basis. But we are still not where we once were. Our racing team/group has significantly been reduced in numbers, something which can be seen at the BVIs and USVIs as well. Now that we have rebuilt our premises and brought the number of students back up, we need to start encouraging racing again and we need to start with bringing back the resources and logistics.
"The affects of Irma are still very much visible, especially with our kids. Our sailing program provides a welcome distraction and helps them to move on."
